TEFL Success Stories - Part 76

Maria - Athens

My name is Maria Alamanou. I own and run a private FL school in Athens, Greece, where I also teach full time. When I started out seven years ago, I only taught English as a Foreign Language. French courses followed the next year. This year saw the introduction of two more European languages: German and Italian. So, apart from my many administrative responsibilities – along with a home and a ten-year-old son – I have loaded myself with the extra tasks of Course Director in four different languages, schedule coordinator, PR officer and a whole lot more that you can only begin to imagine. It is a one-woman show, but I am not complaining.

My days seem to have developed a knack for repeating themselves lately. No sooner have I managed to crawl out of bed in the morning than it’s bedtime again. All the hours in between are spent teaching, correcting, preparing handouts and, of course, solving a variety of apparently insoluble problems. But the nights are all mine! What’s left of them anyway.
I love night time, especially the few moments when I am asleep, because I dream a lot and, believe it or not, in my dreams I have a life. Last night, in one of those glimmers of dream-life, I had the most impossible dream. I was still thinking about it when I got up this morning, not so much because I liked it, but because it was unusual: being Greek and everything, I’ve rightly come to expect that I can at least have a decent dream in my native language. Alas! Last night was an altogether different night and I had a full-colour, English-speaking dream!

I was loath to tell anyone for fear they might think I’d gone completely daft. But at the school this morning, finding I couldn’t hold back much longer, I told my trusted colleague and friend, Aphrodite, the Italian teacher. She was very accommodating and tried to soothe me down, telling me that she had had dreams in Italian on a number of occasions. She didn’t mention the colour thing. However, there was no mistaking the whispering and snickering that have been going on among the faculty all day today.
What’s worse, my senior Proficiency class got wind of what had come to be a household joke in the school by 7.00 in the evening. I could tell by the knowing look on their faces and the impish smiles. Knowing myself that there’s no easy way round the snide remarks of intelligent undergraduates and realising that the worst was yet to come, I walked into the classroom at 7.10, nose up in the air and a prim smile, both of which were meant to demonstrate how superior a being a teacher can be.
For a change, my Proficiency class noticed my altered physiology (how come they never notice when I glare at them?) and there came the long-awaited flood of questions: “What’s up, Miss? What are you so solemn about? More last-minute changes to the exams?” I knew it was all make-believe, of course, and they were just having me on but I could take it, for by now, I had devised a little plan: own up to it, offer a plausible, irrefutable explanation and nobody will think you’re weird any more. Aloud I said: “All right, everyone! No need to put it on any more. Research has shown that it’s perfectly healthy for any L2 user who employs his linguistic aptitude for more than twelve hours a day to display reverse language interference.”

I knew they wouldn’t have a clue of the words I’d used, which was all on purpose, I assure you. High-sounding words can have this effect on people. They certainly had their effect on these people: they were flabbergasted! Not to mention that Greek students have repeatedly shown a marked dislike for phrasal verbs and terminology that is not derived from Greek. But they knew the word ‘research’ and that added gravity to the remark. “What do you mean exactly, Miss?” “I mean, my dear child, that it is not bizarre for me to dream in English, given the fact that I’ve been using English for the better part of the day for more than fifteen years.”
I can’t begin to describe the laughter and upheaval that followed. When they started coming to, the wise guy of the lot had the nerve to come up with the question: “You mean you even dream in English now?” And the inevitable piece of advice followed right after, verbalised by one of his cheekiest sidekicks: “I’d get special help if I were you”. My only consolation was that his functional grammar worked perfectly for once.
I think this little incident serves to prove that we should beware of our language of habitual use, as it possesses the uncanny power of seeping through our whole existence, taking over almost completely, at the expense of our good old mother tongue.

This is a true account of a difficult day. It is also a snapshot of the realities of the EFL situation in Greece.
I can’t believe it’s 7.30 already. My son’s yelps leave no room for doubt. Some thing or other to the effect that he is going to be late for school again. AGAIN? I spring up, out of bed and into the kitchen, groping my way along. Something feels wrong and it’s not the usual, familiar, cosy drowsiness that I’ve grown so close to lately. Well, no time to fret over it whatever it is. Two gulps of strong coffee and there I am, behind the wheel, driving my son to school.
As soon as I am back, a violent sneeze sends me running for the thermometer. I am running a fever alright! Wonderful thoughts flood my head of a long snuggle in bed. I have a good excuse. But there is no worse kind of teacher than a conscientious teacher. Ask anyone! The words of one of my first employers start creeping through my brain: “A good teacher never falls ill.” The emphasis is on the “never”. Down go two antihistamine pills and out the door I go, on my way to work and the first one and a half hours of classes for today.

It’s an intermediate-level English class (11- to 13-year-olds) and I have known the kids for about five years. They’re good kids, considerate and kind-hearted, and immediately offer to see me safely home and back into bed where I belong: “You, ill, Miss. No lesson. Hooray!” You see, English is fine by them when it comes to singing songs or watching soaps but, let’s face it, it’s never been their strong point. It is definitely not their strong point at 9.00 o’clock in the morning, either!
Putting on a brave face and my best morning smile, I tell them there is nothing to worry about and beckon them to their seats, which they won’t take until after I’ve promised to translate a song for them at the end of the lesson. My voice has started cracking by now and my throat is sending up flames. Teaching eight restless kids, freshly out of bed, and completely oblivious to the mechanics of the social aspects of the Passive Voice while shivering and half-sleeping yourself is no easy task. I tell them so and beg of them to go easy on me, if only on this one morning. I said they’re good kids. They sympathise with me and dutifully fill page after page of notes in silence. Mind you, their spontaneous response has nothing to do with the promise I made them not to tell their parents how badly they’d done in the last vocabulary test.

At ‘class dismissed’ I steal a look at my watch and it’s only 10.30 a.m. Fridays are not the best of days as I teach till 13.00, break for lunch and some rest and come back at 17.00 to resume teaching till 22.30. That’s on a good Friday. On good Fridays there are no administrative matters to see to between 13.00 and 17.00. But this is not a good Friday. A phone call around midday informs me that on Monday evening I have to attend an oral examiners’ briefing session for the upcoming exams in November. Disaster! I have to arrange for stand-ins for my Monday classes, which at such short notice is not an easy thing to do.
Glassy-eyed and hazed-over by a record-breaking temperature, I shuffle through the heap of paper on my desk and – hey presto! – I come up with the employees records, from which to pick ‘volunteers’ who would be willing to put in a few extra hours on Monday evening. It’s only 13.30 in the afternoon but I feel the weariness of a whole week’s work weighing heavily on my shoulders, which are aching anyway! There’s no way I can see this Friday through, I think to myself. But I will see it through because, despite what my former employer seemed to think, even good teachers fall ill. But even when they do fall ill, good teachers teach by example. If I am to be seen to flinch from a minor sickness, what lesson do I teach to my students and colleagues?

TEFL Success Stories - Part 58

Liana - Greece
My name is Liana. I work as an English language teacher in state primary schools in Crete, Greece. I have a permanent working position, that is, I'm not a substitute teacher, that is, I don't run the risk of not having a job...
This year I work at two primary schools, one in the small town where I live and the other in a village 25 kms from home. Given the fact I worked in a primary education office for the past two years, which means I didn't teach at all during that period of time, I am now trying to recover from the shock of being back in the classroom.

t’s the end of a rather easy week. No fights with colleagues, no major problems in class, both photocopiers working, a day off because of teachers’ elections, no “twilight zone” spells during lessons (that’s when my brain collapses and panic takes over), all homework corrected and returned (well, apart from two worksheets…)
In this country once you get a permanent working position, that is you become a permanent civil servant, you would have to be mad to give it up. This means that state schoolteachers, like all civil servants, are doomed to teach for the rest of their lives. I say “doomed” because although most university graduates dream of the day they get appointed they cannot escape feeling tired, overworked or even bored after a few years and try not to think of the 35 years they have to spend in classrooms. The typical comment most teachers make is: Do you think we will actually walk out of the classroom one day or four nice people will carry us? Considering most teachers who are my age (I’m 38) will retire at 60-65, I think the second option is more probable.

I stayed away from classrooms and schools for two years. I chose to work in a primary education office because I felt fed up with teaching and all its consequences. Anyway, I knew that it would be just for a short period of time so I regarded it as a change, a break from the hustle and bustle of schools. Teachers who decide to work in education offices do not lose their jobs; they’re transferred to different posts depending on their skills, and when they wish to return to school, they simply… do so.
I could have stayed longer if I wished. In fact, some really hilarious scenes took place when I told the chief administrator I was not going to reapply for an office job. Whenever she met me, she gave a very serious, very concentrated, almost desperate look and said: “Liana, please, don’t go. Don’t leave me. I need you…” After the first couple of times, the whole thing became really annoying, as I had to repeat: “No, you don’t understand. I cannot stay any longer. It’s finished. I’m bored here. I get cramps on my left thigh. I sit too many hours.” etc, etc…

I somehow knew it was absolutely stupid of me to leave. For certain reasons, staying in the office for 1-2 years more would be my passport for a transfer to Athens, which, otherwise, is an almost impossible dream. Not to mention the fact that it’s not so bad to make a cup of coffee and work quietly on your computer or deal with administrative issues instead of getting paranoid about the hyperactive boy in class E or the whole bunch of spoilt brats in class D.
But I left because when I start feeling restless, common sense goes on a long journey.
Am I feeling happier now? I don’t know. There’s so much stress in this job, so many children, so much noise, so much to think about, so much paperwork, so many mixed-ability classes and so little time. Just to mention a few problems. But I’ve stopped having cramps on my left thigh.
